NOTRE-DAME CATHEDRAL IN CHARTRES
Notre-Dame cathedral in Chartres is a masterpiece of 12th and 13th art, and it's the most complete and best preserved Gothic cathedral in France. Built and decorated between 1134 and 1260, in 1979 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cathedral is open from 8.30am to 7.30pm throughout the year. Guided tours of the cathedral are organised.
Le Musée des Beaux-Arts
Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Musée des Beaux-Arts has extensive collections of classical and modern art on display all year round, including works by Zurbaran, Chardin, Vlaminck and Soutine as well as a collection of works from Oceania and a range of 17th and 18th century harpsichords.
La Maison Picassiette
The Maison Picassiette is a must-see landmark in Chartres which is officially classified as an historic monument, and it's an extraordinary and unusual work of naive art. It has been decorated inside and out with mosaics made up of fragments of broken tableware which were found in the local area by its owner, Raymond Isidore – nicknamed 'Picassiette' (hoarder).
